Are you feeling down/hopeless about politics? Do something about it…

Written by Albuquerque DSA | Jan 23, 2025 3:39:52 PM

I’ve been hearing many people talk about how hopeless they are with the state of the country. How we’ve lost the fight. How things are going to be awful going forward and there is nothing we can do about it.

This feeling is your liberalism telling you that you don’t have to do anything right now. That you can sit around, get comfortable, and just watch things as they happen to people around you hoping you don’t personally get hit. Nothing will change right? So why bother trying to change it?

The good news is that many people are trying to change it. And you can be those people. It will make you feel much better, I promise. And things are not even close to being hopeless as will be explained in this email. There are close to 800 people that will receive this email. 300 of you are current dues paying DSA members. If we all came together we could be a huge force in this state especially with the amazing work Santa Fe DSA has already been doing.

The most basic thing you can do:

Start attending our meetings and get involved with the ABQ DSA. The week after the election we had a huge turn out at our monthly meeting. The next month's meeting was back to being much smaller. Having inconsistent turn out makes doing anything very difficult if not impossible. And there is so much we can do. So much we have to do.

Many of us have work and families. It's hard to dedicate much time to politics. I get it. But a couple hours of your time once a month at the bare minimum will make a huge difference here.

We have a meeting this Saturday at 12:45pm, we need to see you there (details at end of this email).

Do you remember last time Trump was elected what happened 4 years later? We almost elected a socialist as president. It took the power of the entire Democratic party, their legacy media, and a ton of luck to stop that. If we had someone that was willing to fight more than Bernie did we would have been unstoppable. If you think it’s impossible you’re ignoring the reality of what happened and how close we came.

Also look at Trump. In 2015 the vast majority of the Republican party was doing everything they could to stop him. People like JD Vance were calling him Hitler. The entire media establishment was against him. MSNBC's Morning Joe was a rare exception. This opposition included most of Fox News and much of right wing talk radio. Yet he won. And after he won he was able to get the entire party to become his own personal cult. There is no reason to believe we can’t do this to the Democratic party but for actual good. And there are examples very near us where this has already worked.

In Mexico AMLO implemented major social democratic reforms and was unbeatable in the next election; getting his hand picked candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum, easily elected with large majorities in their legislature with an approval rating in the 70% range. This is a jewish woman in socially conservative Mexico. While Democrats will tell you a woman can’t ever win an election here to excuse their complete and utter incompetence.

This is also the case in Brazil. Where after a far right government and US doing everything they could to undermine him Lula da Silva won and enacted sweeping social democratic reforms.

We can do this. Yes…really…we can fucking do this.

But only if we come together and pool our resources/man power. We don’t have the luxury of being backed by billionaires like the establishment parties are. We only have each other. And together we can be a formidable force that these billionaires are terrified of. They want you sitting around doing nothing as they pick your pockets dry.

What’s on the line in the next 2-4

The next 4 years will very likely decide what the future of this country looks like for the next few decades. Do you deserve to have a say in this?

  • Local city elections here in Albuquerque

    • 5 council seats are up for grabs along with the mayor race

  • Critical Primaries in 2026

    • Governor race
Currently centrist Deb Haaland who supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020 is the front runner. We have a ton of time to challenge her

    • All 3 US House races

      • This includes Melanie Stansbury who is absolutely awful

    • Potential primary for the senate seat Ben Lujan currently has

    • Ton of important NM legislature elections where we can get DSA members in those seats

  • 2027-2028 Presidential Primaries

    • We have a real shot to take over the Democratic party again. A Democratic party that is currently in shambles. Are we going to allow them to pick another worthless centrist to run in 2028? Who wins this primary likely decides what your life, and the life of your loved ones, will look like for the next few decades.

  • May 2028 general strike

    • UAW with Shawn Fain is organizing a real ACTUAL general strike. Not some half-baked concept for a general strike a enthusiastic newly converted socialist came up with on twitter. Will we have the membership to help support this here and protect ourselves from the violent state response that is sure to come? We all talked about how great a general strike will be. Well here is a shot for the first time in our lives at making it real. The only shot we might get. Are you going to help?

This is not an exhaustive list. And 2 years is not much time. There will be many critical decisions to be made in the next few months for the 2026 primaries alone before they go into full swing in 2025. We can play a MAJOR role here.

But we will only have power in this process if you come and join the fight on our side by getting involved and being active.

Start by coming to our monthly meeting this Saturday Jan 25th at 12:45pm-2:00pm (show up at 12:30 to help setup). Come in person if possible but zoom link is below if needed.

If you’re nervous about coming to a place you’ve never been to talk to people you never met we get it. We don’t bite and I promise you we’re very welcoming. Reach out to us with any questions.
