Action Required for Cuba
We can be sure that the incoming Trump administration will be hostile to Cuba and other developing countries seeking to improve their economies free of the restraints set by the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other economic tentacles of Western Imperialism.
HOWEVER, because revolutionary Cuba defied global capitalism, not only U.S. military power, but transnational corporations and banks as well, the U.S. has imposed a vicious economic embargo of Cuba for over 60 years. This embargo has crippled much of Cuba’s ability to compete and thrive in the world economy. And it has imposed undue hardships and misery on the Cuban people. Global capital has been trying to starve the revolution by starving its people. This situation is intolerable, and long overdue for being ended.
In recent decades, the U.S. embargo of Cuba has been supported by a U.S. State Department list of so-called “State Sponsors of Terrorism” (SSOT).
There’s no evidence that Cuba has sponsored any terrorism in the past decades, but that doesn’t keep the State Department and the CIA from spreading misinformation.
President Obama removed Cuba from the SSOT a decade ago. Donald Trump put Cuba back on the SSOT in 2019. President Biden was Obama‘s Vice President -- he may be open to removing Cuba from the SSOT. Trump may try to put Cuba back on the SSOT, even if Biden removes it. But it would take time to reverse … the Cuban people could benefit greatly from even a relatively short time off the SSOT.
Democratic Socialists of America, the DSA International Committee and the Albuquerque DSA Local Chapter vigorous the DSA for Cuba initiative.

The Cuban Revolution stands as a milestone in modern history. Within a few short years after the 1959 revolution Cuba was to reach a 95% literacy rate after decades of having one of the lowest rates in the Western Hemisphere. Within a few short years, Cuba was able to provide all Cubans with free universal health care services. Cubans held over 700 town hall meetings throughout the country to write and edit its national constitution … AND VOTE ON IT! Cuba is not an international pariah! Rather it is an open democratic system that proves socialism really works even in the face of an over half century embargo. Socialism works, but unfortunately it can also be maligned and starved. WE MUST ACT TO MAKE WASHINGTON CEASE THESE INJUSTICES!
In the coming months, Albuquerque DSA will be planning initiatives in support of DSA’s Cuba Campaign to oppose the U.S. embargo of Cuba. A critical part of those efforts will be the removal of Cuba from the SSOT, and opposition to efforts to keep that country on the list.
