As I woke up this morning I heard MSNBC patting themselves on the back about how Kamla couldn’t have done anything better. How her campaign was literally FLAWLESS.
A flawless campaign that embraced Dick Cheney and Benjamin Netanyahu and told anyone that wanted to stop a genocide that their vote was not needed/wanted. A flawless campaign that said they would do nothing different from the historically unpopular Biden admin. A flawless campaign who’s big idea was small business tax credits for some new businesses in specific districts and how immigrants really were poisoning the blood of our nation (just in a more polite way). A flawless Democratic campaign that sent a guy to America’s largest podcast 4 days before the election to help push the conspiracy that Democrats are pouring illegal immigrants into this country intentionally to swing elections in their favor (I wish I was kidding). A “flawless” campaign that LOST by historic margins, cost the Democrats the senate, and will give Trump a trifecta.
How does a campaign with such bold “policies” and strong “messaging” fail this miserably at a time when Americans can’t afford housing, groceries, and their take home pay has fallen drastically? It’s a question that mainstream liberals are asking themselves unironically this morning. The same liberals who said Trump is the end of our democracy will now tell us the Democrats couldn’t have done anything differently and it's actually American Arabs, Hispanics, and the left that are the true villains here.
If we expect the Democratic party to learn anything from this on their own they won’t. It will be our job to force them to learn. We have 2 very tough years ahead of us before midterm elections. We need to use every minute of these 2 years to not just organize against Trump but reorganize the Democratic party to a party that actually cares about the American people, actually wants to win elections, and finds genocide unacceptable. Last time Trump was elected we almost got a literal socialist to win the Democratic primary just 4 short years later. If we can’t fix the Democratic party we can make it go the way of the Whigs after they refused to take a stand on slavery. What we can’t do is pretend it’s business as usual and nothing can ever change.
We hope to see you at our next meeting where we can start working on resisting the Trump administration and fixing the ineffective/corrupt Democratic party so we have a chance in 2 years to make real change.
Our next meeting is:
Saturday, November 23, 2024 12:45 pm to 2:00 pm at the international district library
State Results
The good news is New Mexico did fairly well in the election. Gabe Vasquez, who the right portrayed as a defund the police radical, kept his seat in the US house. Gabe was responsive to our pressure on him to stand up for the Palestinian people. Eleanor Chavez, an Abq DSA member, won her state house seat. Yanira Gurrola, who the ABQ DSA supported also won her election.
Being a socialist requires a certain level of optimism. We can’t predict the future. But we can shape it.
